I just got off the phone with two knowledgeable people from Nelnet. I have a unique and legitimate issue as to why the 120 late day notices showed up on my credit report but due to the policies of Nelnet, they were unable to get in contact with the creditors to remove these delinquencies from my account.

I think these gentleman were just doing there jobs but the policies need to change there. They need an investgation department or something to look at these legitimate claims for justice.

the dream has been taken from many people in this country and the only way to get it back is to fight for it. Our government does not care and most people only care if it affcts them. every one should just stop paying for these loans buy things with cash and destroy the choke hold bsnks have on people. banks are parasites they live off of good people and create this falacy we need to live beyond our means and buy things we do not need. work a part time job go to school at a more affordable school buy a house we can afford maybe one in a distressed neighborhood . buying the big house in good neighborhood that you cannot afford with that special school is a joke. change a neighborhood buy one spend time changing a neighborhood for the better work less spend time with your kids. life has more meaning than striving to be a slave to a house a car and a student loan. there is no reason to live a miserable life. Make less spend less and be happy

So far I'm not too impressed with Nelnet. I had no means of contacting them to pay my bill for the first six months. I simply didn't know who to pay. Months later, when they finally call, I pay to my bill immediately and have not missed a payment in 2 years.
I ran my credit and saw that I had a 120 day late charges from when I didn't know how to pay. Customer service was not helpful and gave me a number to fax my complaint to. I did and they replied something along the lines of "our records are accurate and valid you have to dispute through credit bureau" (paraphrasing). So I guess I have to go through them, but they're just going to say, you didn't pay in time on your first 3 payments.
Albeit, perhaps I should have pursued them harder, but it's a huge black mark on my credit score. To make matters even worse, its not over one incident its over all the loans associated with nelnet. So instead of having one 120 day late hit, I have six of them...
I'm not sure if there is anything I can do???
Maybe I'll try writing that address over and over again to see if they'll at least consolidate it to one late fee...

My Sallie Mae horror story goes something like this. I had setup monthly electronic payments from my bank account to sallie Mae for my student loan payment. This was working out just fine for months. All of a sudden back in 2010, I received a call from someone at Sallie Mae asking why I was behind on my payments. I was like, "What are you talking about?". Turns out, the last 2 months payments were not getting applied to my account. Huh? Yah, that's right, they were getting my payment each month and applying it to a different account. Good lord. It took a few phone calls to get that fixed. I now check my account on Sallie Mae each month to make sure they did not start doing that again.

Cindy, that is a great idea. I bet there are other monthly services that we all pay for that we could do without and apply to help paying down our student loans quicker.

I know a lot of people that pay for monthly gym memberships that could easily workout/exercise at home and apply that money to the student loan.

I got rid of my cable and get all of the local HD channels for free. I also signed up for netflix so I can watch my favorite shows and movies. I took the savings of $75 per month and now apply that much extra to my student loan payment each month.

Going from Nelnet to Direct Loans was a good move on my part. It has been one year now and I haven't had any payment issues and am starting to see the balance come down finally.

You just have to be determined to get rid of your student loan debt. I would love to have an extra $500 a month to spend or save.

I have 2 30 day late marks on my credit reports for my student loan that is with sallie mae. I didn't realize that you can dispute those through the credit agencies. I would love to have clean creidt report. Will give this a try and see what happens.

I gotta say that I have never thought about doing that. Depending on the size of your student loan, the hardest part may be obtaining enough credit to cover the student loan balance. I agree that not being able to extinguish student loan debt in bankruptcy seems wrong. Not sure I would have the kahuna's to attempt this and not worry that it would get flagged in the bankruptcy proceedings.
